Roof rack space is the reason most people leave the recovery boards at home. They are long, awkward, and there is never a clean way to strap them down that survives a corrugated track. Working safely with straps and shackles

• Check every component before it takes load, and pull damaged gear out of service — a cut strap or a stretched shackle does not get a second chance.
• Put the damper on the line first. Everyone not driving should be well outside the arc the line would sweep if it broke.
• Use rated recovery points only. Do not attach to a tow ball, a tow bar tongue, a bumper bar or any bracket that is not rated for recovery. The shackle hitch receiver supplied here is towing hardware, and the recovery rating of your tow bar is a matter for its manufacturer.
• Two straps must never be joined with a shackle.
• The supplier gives no basis for the 4.75 tonne, 8-ton or 10 tonne figures, so none of them can be read as a working load limit. Plan the recovery around the weakest rated item in the chain.
