Gearing built for the long, slow drag

Three-stage planetary gearing spreads the pull across three sets of gears instead of loading one, so no single tooth carries the whole recovery. That matters when the job takes minutes rather than seconds — heat and stress are shared, and the 198:1 reduction lets the motor spin fast while the drum turns slowly and steadily. Slow is exactly what you want with a vehicle sitting in mud and the cable loading up. A two-way free-spool clutch lets you drag cable out by hand to the anchor point instead of powering it out and flattening the battery before the pull even starts.

Steel cable inside a steel case

The drum carries 15.2 m of 5.5 mm steel cable, which is enough to reach a tree set well back from the track. Around it sits an all-steel shell in black frosted paint, with a diamond-profile surface that adds area for the gearbox to shed heat — winch gearboxes die of heat about as often as they die of load. The heavy-duty roller fairlead guides cable in from an angle without chewing the outer strands, and a mechanical brake holds the drum the moment the motor stops.

Run it from where you are standing, not over the bonnet

A tensioned winch cable is the last thing anyone should be standing beside. This kit ships with both a corded hand-held pendant and a wireless remote, so whoever is operating can watch the recovery from well off to one side. The wireless unit is the one that gets used; the corded pendant stays in the bag as the answer to a flat remote battery. Winch lanyards are included for keeping light tension on the cable while it re-spools, which is what stops the top wrap burying itself.

Before you fit this winch

• A winch pulls. It is not a lifting device: never raise or suspend a vehicle with it, and never let anyone stand or work under a load held on a winch line.
• Stay out of line with a tensioned cable and lay a heavy blanket or recovery damper across it. Steel cable stores energy and whips if it parts.
• Check that your mounting point and its fasteners are rated for the pull. The supplied stainless bolts suit the winch; the structure you bolt it to is yours to verify.
• X-BULL publishes no duty cycle for this model. Pull in short bursts and let the motor cool between them.
• Wear gloves. Broken strands in steel cable will open a hand up.
