Cranking a boat onto a trailer by hand is manageable on a flat ramp with someone holding the bow. On a steep, weed-slick ramp with a cross-wind and nobody else around, it is the part of the day that hurts. This 12 volt winch takes that job off your arms and does it at a speed you can watch.

Winding stops being the hard part

The motor drives through a 717:1 reduction, which is deliberately deep gearing: it trades speed for torque, so the drum keeps turning under load instead of stalling partway up the ramp. Drum speed is 1.2 metres a minute, slow enough to see a hull line up on the rollers and correct it before anything gets scraped. Winching is powered in both directions, in and out, so slack can be paid off under control rather than unspooled by hand. The line is 7.2 mm galvanised steel, 10 metres long.

Made for a wet, salty working life

A boat ramp is the harshest place anything on a trailer has to live. Cable, hand crank and pulley are all galvanised steel to resist corrosion and knocks, and X-BULL rates the self-closing socket cover to IP66 against dust and water — that is the supplier's rating, quoted as given. A rotary knob acts as an emergency stop: pull it and the winch halts. If power fails partway up the ramp, the supplied hand crank finishes the retrieve, and the built-in brake holds the load while you sort things out.

Comes off the trailer when you do

A tri-point mounting plate and an anti-slip carry handle mean the winch lifts away between trips instead of sitting out in rain and salt spray for months. At 16 kg it is a two-handed lift, but a manageable one. The wired controller runs on a 3 metre lead, matched by a 3 metre power cable, so you can stand beside the trailer watching the bow rather than leaning over the drum. The galvanised pulley lets you double the line back for heavier hulls, which also cuts load on the drum and heat in the motor.

Before you fit it

• The 6500 lb (3000 kg) figure is quoted by X-BULL as maximum single-line pulling capacity. No breaking strength, working load limit or test standard is stated, so do not treat it as a certified rating.
• This is a boat and trailer loading winch. It is not a vehicle recovery winch and must not be used to snatch or recover a bogged vehicle.
• Never use it to lift, suspend or support a load, and never let anyone stand under or beside a load it is holding.
• Inspect the cable before every use. Retire it once strands are broken, flattened or kinked — a steel cable that fails under tension whips.
• Lay a heavy mat, jacket or purpose-made dampener over the cable while it is under tension, and keep everyone clear of the cable and the arc it would travel if it let go.
• Attach only to rated points on the boat and trailer. A tow ball, tow bar tongue or bumper is not an anchor point.
• Keep hands, gloves and loose clothing away from the drum and fairlead while the winch is running.

Bolt it to the trailer post, run the leads back to the tow vehicle, and the retrieve becomes a two-minute job you can do on your own.
