The head unit is machined from aluminium alloy with an abrasion-resistant anodised finish, which does two jobs at once. The alloy pulls heat off the emitter so output holds up over a long ride, and the coating survives being knocked onto bitumen. The supplier rates it IPX5, covering rain and road spray but not immersion. A non-slip mount and a single button switch keep it workable with gloves on.

Five modes off one 5200 mAh cell

The built-in 5200 mAh battery charges over USB and cuts off on its own once full. Five modes are listed — high, middle, low, strobe and SOS — so the same lamp runs as a commuter light and doubles as a torch at a camp site. Charging takes 10 to 20 hours, worth knowing if the plan is to top it up the night before a ride rather than an hour before.

Before you fit these

• Bicycle lighting requirements, including the use of flashing modes, vary between states. Confirm what applies where you ride before using the strobe or SOS setting on the road.
• Do not shine the lamp into anyone's eyes, and keep it away from flammable or explosive materials.
• The IPX5 rating covers spray, not submersion — do not immerse the lamp.
• Mount the lamps securely and keep them out of reach of children.
• If the set is going unused for a stretch, the supplier asks that it be charged every three months to protect the cell.
