The plug at the back of a transverse four is always the one that will not come out. A deep socket on a long extension goes in at the wrong angle, there is nowhere for a wrist to go, and something in the loom takes the skin off a knuckle. A T-handle with an articulating head reaches it by a different route.
Why the joint matters more than the handle
The head rotates through 360 degrees and folds through 720, so the socket can sit square on the plug while the bar points somewhere your hand can actually reach. Squareness is the real benefit: a socket pulled over at an angle rounds the hex and puts side load on the ceramic insulator, which is how plugs snap off in the head. The T-bar gives even, two-handed pressure for the initial crack, then spins freely to wind the plug out.
Four sockets, two sizes
The set carries two 16 mm (5/8 in) sockets and two 21 mm (13/16 in) sockets — the two hex sizes covering most car, motorcycle, mower and small-engine plugs. It does not cover 14 mm or 18 mm plugs, so check the hex on your existing plug or in the service data before ordering. The steel is hardened with a chrome finish, and assembled length is around 140 mm.
Key features
- Articulating head: 360-degree rotation and 720-degree fold to reach plugs behind the loom.
- Four sockets: two of each size, so nothing stalls when one is buried in a plug well.
- T-bar: even pressure to break a plug loose, then free spinning to wind it out.
- 140 mm assembled: hardened chrome-finished steel, small enough for a glovebox.

Before you change plugs
- Work on a cold engine only. Pulling plugs from a hot alloy head risks stripping the thread, and the exhaust manifold sits right where your hands go.
- Spark plugs have a torque figure specified by the engine manufacturer. Over-tightening stretches or strips the cylinder head thread, which is a head-off repair; under-tightening lets the plug run hot and lose its seal. Finish the job with a torque wrench set to the figure in the service data.
- Blow or brush the debris out of each plug well first. Grit dropped into a cylinder does not come back out.
- Check the socket bore is clean and dry so it seats fully on the hex.
- This is a plug tool, not a breaker bar. Do not use it on seized or high-torque fasteners.
Kept in the toolbox, it turns the worst plug on the engine into the same job as the easy ones.
