Whip aerials snap off in car washes, catch on branches and whistle at highway speed. A shark fin sits flush against the roof instead, which is why almost every new car leaves the factory wearing one. This is the retrofit version for a vehicle that did not.

Sticks on, nothing drilled

Two 3M adhesive pads do the mounting: clean and dry the roof, peel the backing film, press the base down. Nothing is drilled, which matters more than it sounds, because a hole through a roof skin has to be sealed properly and a poor seal is where rust starts years later. The body is moulded ABS in black.

Measure your base before ordering

The fin covers antenna bases up to 9.8 cm by 5.7 cm, and suits a roof that is flat or only gently curved. Check both with a tape measure rather than by eye: the pads need full contact across the base to hold at highway speed.

Before you fit this

• The supplier calls it a signal amplifier that improves FM and AM reception, but lists no aerial cable, connector, power feed or gain figure. That claim is unsubstantiated, so buy it for the look.
• Only black is stocked. The supplier's text mentions other shades, but black is the single option available here.
• The adhesive needs a clean, dry, degreased surface. Fitting over dirt or wax is why one lets go on the highway.
