Plenty of cars leave the factory with a completely bare roof. No rails, no tracks, nothing to bolt to. That rules out most rack systems, which need a rail to clamp around before they will go anywhere. This pair of bars is built for exactly that roof, gripping the door apertures instead.
Fits a bare roof without a drill
The clamping plate is adjustable, which is how one set of bars covers a spread of different door openings instead of being cut for a single model. The supplier gives a maximum roof width of 41.3 inches, roughly 1050 mm, and quotes about ten minutes to fit with everything needed supplied. Nothing is drilled and nothing is glued, so the bars lift off and the car looks standard again. One limitation is stated plainly by the supplier and worth repeating: the design suits four and five-door vehicles and is not recommended on two-door models.
Shaped to keep the wind down
An open roof bar makes noise, and that noise is usually what makes people strip a rack off between trips. The tube here has an aerodynamic profile rather than a square section, which reduces the air tumbling off its trailing edge. The bars are 6063-T6 aluminium, a heat-treated alloy that stays rigid without adding much weight and that does not corrode the way a steel bar will. Rubber pads sit under each mounting foot so the paint does not wear through where the clamp bites.
Key features
- Suits a naked roof: no factory rails, tracks or mounting points required, which is where most rack systems stop.
- 6063-T6 aluminium: rigid and light, with none of the rust that comes with steel bars.
- Lockable: an anti-theft lock system with two keys supplied, so the bars can stay on the car.
- Adjustable clamping plate: one set covers a range of roof widths up to the stated maximum.
- PP mounting feet with rubber pads: a tough plastic that will not rust, and padding between the rack and the paintwork.
Specifications
- Fitment: naked (bare) roofs on four and five-door vehicles
- Maximum roof width: 41.3 in, approximately 1050 mm
- Material: 6063-T6 aluminium bars, PP mounting feet
- Load rating: 155 lb as quoted by the supplier. No basis is given for whether the figure covers one bar or the pair, and no metric equivalent is stated.
- Security: anti-theft lock, two keys
- Installation: no drilling; the supplier quotes about 10 minutes
Before you fit these
- Not recommended for two-door vehicles. That caution is the supplier's own.
- Measure across the roof at the door apertures. 41.3 inches, about 1050 mm, is the stated maximum.
- The 155 lb figure is the rack's rating. Your vehicle's roof load limit is published in its owner's handbook, and the lower of the two numbers is the one to work to.
Two bars, four locking feet and no permanent changes to the car. Enough to get a roof box or a bike carrier onto a vehicle that came with nothing up top.
