Exhaust systems come apart at the joints, rarely somewhere convenient. A pair of U-bolt clamps in the toolbox turns a rattling, blowing pipe into a roadside fix needing nothing but a spanner and somewhere to lie down.

Rejoining a pipe without a welder

These close a 3 inch joint by compression, which is how most factory and aftermarket systems are held together anyway. Nothing needs welding and there is no flange to line up. Bolted rather than fused, the joint can be undone later: pulling a muffler for a swap, dropping a mid-pipe to reach a gearbox, straightening a crooked tip. The supplier states the clamping load stops gas and noise escaping.

Galvanised carbon steel under the car

Underbody hardware fails from corrosion long before it fails from load. Carbon steel gives the U-bolt the strength to be tensioned hard, and the galvanised coating stands between those threads and a wet winter of road spray. It also means the nuts still turn later — the difference between a ten-minute job and an angle grinder.

Check before you drive it

• Let the system go completely cold before touching it.
• Re-check the nuts once the exhaust has been up to temperature and cooled again. Metal moves.
• A leaking joint ahead of the cabin can push carbon monoxide inside. If exhaust can be smelled in the car, stop and seal the joint before driving further.
