Lifting a gearbox out of a ute tray by hand is how backs get wrecked. A 12 V telescopic hoist bolted to the tray, a trailer or a workshop frame does the lift instead, swings the load on a base that turns a full circle, and sets it down where you want it with one hand free to steer.
Two capacities, and they are not the same number
T-REX rates the XL360 Series II at 500 kg on a single rope and 800 kg with the cable reeved double. Those are two different set-ups rather than one figure with a margin built in, and the 800 kg applies only when the cable runs double through the block, which shortens the usable lift to match. The product title quotes the 800 kg figure on its own, so work to the rating that matches how the cable is actually reeved on the day. An overload cut-out backs that up: exceed the rated load and the hoist disables itself, then permits a restart after 30 seconds.
Reach, height and a base that turns
Lift height from base to hook is 2 m, with maximum reach of 1.44 m out from the mast. The boom runs three tiers across three telescopic settings, so reach can be traded against height for the job in front of you. The base rotates a continuous 360 degrees by hand and holds position with a brake, which is what makes loading a tray practical: lift at the tailgate, swing across, lower onto the tray floor. Power is 12 V DC drawing up to 125 amps, so it works off a vehicle battery on a job site rather than needing mains.
Steel, powder coat and a 6.6 m control lead
The frame is carbon steel with a powder-coated finish, and it folds down between jobs. Cable is 4.8 mm, 4.5 m of it in single-rope configuration and 5.5 m double, with no-load line speed quoted at 3.6 m/min on a single rope. Slow is the point here, because precise placement beats speed when a 400 kg lump is swinging. The pendant switch runs on a 6.6 m lead, far enough back to keep the operator out of the load's path. Assembled weight is 56.3 kg and minimal assembly is required out of the carton.
Key features
- Two rated capacities: 500 kg single-rope and 800 kg double-rope, both quoted as T-REX states them.
- Overload protection: disables operation above the rated load, with a 30 second re-start.
- 360 degree manual rotation: continuous, with a brake to hold the boom where you leave it.
- 12 V DC operation: up to 125 amps, so a vehicle or workshop battery supply runs it.
- Three-tier telescopic boom: three settings for trading reach against lift height.
- Folding carbon steel frame: powder coated, and packs down when not in use.

Before you bolt it down
- High tensile bolts to fasten the hoist are not supplied. Source hardware to suit the structure you are mounting to.
- The 800 kg figure applies to double-rope reeving only. On a single rope the limit is 500 kg. Never work to the higher number on a single line.
- Never stand or reach under a suspended load, and never leave a load hanging unattended.
- The supplier's marketing text mentions a "10' dual control" while its own specification list gives the switch cable as 6.6 m. The two figures contradict each other; the specification value is the one published above.
- T-REX names no compliance standard, certification or test rating for this hoist.
- Minimal assembly is required before first use.
Suits ute trays, trailers, pontoons and workshop frames where there is something solid to bolt to. Check the mounting structure will carry the rated load before you order.
