Chains are often the difference between reaching the alpine gate and turning back at the bottom of the hill. This set is the strap type: six TPU belts with zinc alloy buckles, threaded through the wheel one at a time and pulled tight, so nothing has to be laid out on the ground and driven over in the dark.

TPU that stays workable when it is freezing

The belts are moulded from TPU rather than steel link, which is why the whole set weighs 2.6 kg. The supplier gives the material a low-temperature figure of minus 50 degrees — well past the point where cheaper plastics turn brittle and crack. TPU also gives a little under load, so the belt follows the tread instead of hammering it, and the supplier describes it as resistant to friction and tearing. A cushion sits under each fixing buckle to keep metal off the wheel, and the zinc alloy buckle is shaped so it does not wear the front or the shoulder of the tyre.

Two things decide whether they will fit

The wheels must have open spokes, because each strap passes through the wheel and around the tread — a solid steel rim or a full wheel cover leaves nowhere for the belt to go. The second is tyre width, and the supplier's own figures disagree with each other: the product title gives 165 to 275 mm, while the specification list gives 165 to 265 mm. Both are printed below exactly as supplied. Measure the section width on your tyre sidewall, and where the two figures differ, work to the narrower of them.

Before you fit these

• The two tyre-width figures above come from the supplier and do not match. Check your own tyre before ordering.
• Your wheels need open spokes — the straps must pass through them.

• Do not fit a strap over or beside the valve stem.
• Keep them off bare bitumen, dry footpaths, clear flat ground and sharp objects; the supplier warns against running them where there is no snow.
