A thief who manages to start your car still has to steer it. That is the idea behind a T-bar lock: it clamps across the rim and limits how far the wheel turns, so the car cannot be driven anywhere useful with the engine running.

Limits the wheel rather than decorating it

The bar sits across the wheel and restricts rotation to a narrow arc; the supplier is upfront that the wheel still moves a little within a set range rather than seizing solid. Locking and unlocking is a two-second key operation, helped by a spring-loaded opening that lets the bar extend and retract instead of being wound out by hand. A lock that takes half a minute to fit ends up in the boot by the second week.

Aluminium alloy body, two keys, one barrel

The body is aluminium alloy with a non-slip handle, finished in bright yellow so it reads as an obstacle through the windscreen; half the value of a visible lock is that the car gets skipped. Two keys are supplied for a security cylinder barrel. The supplier calls that barrel pick-resistant and the keys non-duplicable, which we pass on as their claim rather than a tested result.

Before you fit these

• The supplier gives 38 mm as a steering wheel "diameter", which no wheel matches. Measure your own and treat the number as unreliable.
• Sit the bar clear of the airbag cover in the wheel centre, and remove the lock before driving off.

A plain mechanical deterrent to keep under the seat and clip on wherever you would rather not leave the car unattended.
