Three fixed stages, not a sliding guess

The pole sets at 55 cm, 100 cm and 120 cm through a rotating adjuster with fixed stops rather than an infinitely variable clamp. At 55 cm it behaves like a stubby handled brush for sills and lower doors. At 100 cm it covers bonnet and boot from standing. At 120 cm it reaches the centre of a wagon roof, or the top pane of a house window. The tube is thickened aluminium alloy, which is where most of the 600 g sits.

Two covers means one is always dry

This model is listed with two extra-large chenille covers, and that matters more than it sounds. Chenille holds a great deal of water, and a cover that went back in the cupboard damp after the last wash is not something you want dragged across paint. Run one, rinse it, hang it, use the second next time. Both are removable and machine washable, and the supplier asks for natural air drying rather than heat.

Care and handling

• Rinse grit out of the chenille before it goes near paint, and again after any pass over wheels or lower panels.
• Air dry the cover after every wash — the supplier warns that storing it damp leads to mould.

Between the car, the caravan and the front windows of the house, it earns its cupboard space several times over.
