That rhythmic tick from a rear tyre at highway speed is usually a stone wedged in a tread groove. Left where it is, it works deeper and chews at the block edges. Digging it out with a screwdriver risks the rubber; a hook shaped for the job does not.

Four ways into a tread groove

The head carries three hook profiles and a brush. A sharp pick goes after small stones jammed in tight, a right-angle hook deals with gravel in the main grooves, and a reverse barb drags debris back out of the deep tread instead of pushing it further in. The brush sweeps out the mud and sand left behind — the step most people skip, and the reason a cleared groove fills straight back up on the next drive.

The other two jobs it does

The shaft unscrews to reveal a stainless steel bit with a flathead at one end and a Phillips at the other. No substitute for a toolkit, but it covers a loose number plate screw at the side of a track. The tail of the handle carries what the supplier describes as a high-hardness tungsten steel glass breaker, intended as an escape tool. A storage bag comes with it, which keeps the thing in the glovebox rather than lost in the boot.

Before you rely on the glass breaker

• The supplier does not state which glass types the breaker is intended for, and side and rear glazing is not built the same way across all modern vehicles. Check what your vehicle has fitted, and carry a purpose-built escape tool if that capability matters to you.
• The pick is sharp. Keep it in the supplied bag rather than loose under a seat.
• Work the hook along the groove instead of levering against the tread blocks. A stone sitting down against the belt, or a cut in the tread, is a tyre shop job.
