Spreading wax with a folded rag is how one panel ends up with a thick smear and the next gets almost nothing. A dedicated applicator holds product in the foam and lets it out evenly, and at six to a pack there is a clean face ready for every stage of a detail.

Foam core, microfibre face

Each pad is a microfibre sleeve over a sponge insert. The sponge gives the pad something to compress against, so pressure spreads across the whole face rather than concentrating under your fingertips, while the microfibre outer carries the product. The supplier states the sleeve edges are machine-stitched to stop the cover working loose and to cut friction against the panel.

The finger pocket does the steering

A pocket is sewn into the back of each pad, so it stays on your hand through a full panel instead of being pinched between fingers. Across a bonnet that is the difference between an even coat and a tired wrist. At 12.7 cm (5 in) across, a pad covers ground quickly and still fits a door shut or the flat of a bumper.

Getting the best out of them

• Rinse wax or polish residue out before washing, so it does not set hard in the pile.
• Keep one pad per product; a pad that has had trim dressing through it will not apply wax cleanly again.
• Work on a cool panel out of direct sun, as most waxes and polishes instruct.
