In-car wireless CarPlay adapter, plug-and-play

The cable is the weak point in a factory CarPlay setup. It lives in the centre console, gets yanked every time someone climbs out, and eventually the connector goes intermittent right when the navigation is doing something useful. This dongle plugs into that same USB port and hands the job to a wireless link.

Bluetooth finds the phone, Wi-Fi carries the screen

Two radios split the work. Bluetooth handles the handshake and call audio, while the Wi-Fi link, quoted at 2.4 to 5.8 GHz, carries the screen data a moving map actually needs. A Cortex-A7 dual-core chip sits between the phone and the car's wired protocol doing the translation. After the first pairing it reconnects on its own when the ignition comes on, so the phone can stay in a pocket.

The dash controls behave as they always did

The head unit still believes it is talking to a wired phone, so nothing on the dash changes. Steering wheel buttons, the rotary knob and the touchscreen work the way they did. The housing is zinc alloy with an acrylic face, chosen to shed heat, because the chip runs the whole time the ignition is on.
