Nobody wants to sheet a wall and then find a compression joint weeping behind it. A hydrostatic test pump fills the line with water and holds it under pressure for as long as you care to watch the needle, turning a guess about your joints into an answer before the plasterboard goes on.

Fifty bar, read three ways

The gauge carries bar, psi and MPa on one face, with a black pointer showing live pressure and a red one you set as a reference, so a slow drop over an hour is obvious at a glance. Maximum test pressure is 50 bar (5 MPa). Twin check valves let the pressure be walked up in fine increments and held there, which makes a gentle test on soft pipe possible without overshooting the joint you are trying to prove.

A twelve-litre tank and a long lever

The steel tank holds 12 L, enough to fill a decent run of pipe without refilling mid-test, and it is heavy-walled enough to survive life in the back of a van. The lever is 22 inches (55.88 cm) long with an anti-skid rubber wrap. Leverage is the whole story on a hand pump: the last few bar are where a short handle stops being usable.

Before you pressurise anything

• Test only to the rating of the weakest component in the system. The pump reaching 50 bar says nothing about what the pipe, fitting or vessel on the other end will tolerate.
• Bleed the pressure back to zero before cracking any hose or fitting. Stored energy in a filled line does not announce itself.
• Water and oil are the only media the supplier names. No compatibility with petrol, LPG or compressed gas is stated, so do not use it for fuel or gas testing.
• Wear eye protection and keep bystanders clear of the joint under test.
