Headlight globes fade long before they fail, and the drop is gradual enough that most drivers only notice on the first wet night of winter. This is a 100 W H1 halogen — a large step up in wattage, and one that comes with a check to do first.

What 100 watts actually means here

A standard H1 draws 55 W. This globe is rated at 100 W, close to double, and the supplier's brightness claims follow from that: up to 150% more light than a stock halogen in one place, three times brighter in another. The two figures do not agree, and neither carries a test basis. What is not in dispute is the draw: a globe pulling twice the current turns most of that extra into heat, in the connector, the loom and the reflector housing behind it.

Coated glass and a white-shifted beam

The envelope is UV quartz glass with a precision coating, which shifts the output away from the yellow of an untinted halogen. Colour temperature is where the supplier contradicts itself: the title says 5000 K, the body says 6000 K, and both appear below as stated. Otherwise it is a straight swap into the original socket — no ballast, ignitor or housing extension.

Before you fit these

• At 100 W this globe draws close to double a standard 55 W H1. Before fitting, check that the headlight connector, the loom and the reflector housing can carry the extra current and shed the extra heat. Higher wattage in a circuit sized for a standard globe can melt connectors and craze a reflector.
• Wattage and colour temperature limits for forward-facing lighting apply to road vehicles and vary by state. Confirm the requirements that apply to your vehicle and state before fitting for road use. No standard or approval is named in the supplier data, and none is claimed here in either direction.
• Check which globe type your vehicle currently uses before ordering. H1 and H7 look alike in a parts diagram and are not interchangeable.
• Do not touch the glass when fitting. Oil from skin bakes onto a halogen envelope and brings on early failure — handle the globe by its base or through a clean cloth.
• The globe stays extremely hot for some time after it is switched off. Let it cool before handling.

Where the wiring and housing can take the heat, this is an inexpensive way to put more light down the road.
