Not every heater install needs a long exhaust. Where the unit sits low in a ute canopy or a camper trailer, a short pipe straight down and out is the tidiest answer: fewer bends, less condensate trapped, nothing extra to rattle against the floor. Short run, fewer places to go wrong

Every bend in a heater exhaust adds resistance, and every low point collects water that condenses out as the gas cools. Keeping the run to 600 mm removes most of both problems. Drop it through the floor, angle it away from the body and clamp each end. The corrugated wall still flexes enough for a gentle curve where the pipe has to clear a chassis rail or a step, without collapsing the bore.

Built to sit under a vehicle

The tube is stainless throughout, so heat cycling and road spray do not leave it scaling or flaking at the joints. Read this before installation

• The outlet must sit outside any enclosed cabin, canopy or sleeping space, positioned to the heater maker's instructions.
• Diesel exhaust carries carbon monoxide. Where the heater runs overnight, a CO alarm in that space is worth having.
• A short run still gets very hot — keep it clear of tyres, fuel lines, wiring and bedding.
• Re-check the clamps after the first few hours of running, once the joint has settled through some heat cycles.

Worth keeping a spare on the shelf if the heater does real work through winter.
