A generic scanner plugs in, reads the engine module, reports no faults — and the actual problem sits in a body or instrument module the scanner never spoke to. On a number of Fords those modules live on a second, slower CAN bus, and a tool that only listens to the fast one comes back clean every time.
Two buses, one toggle switch
This adapter carries a physical switch between HS-CAN and MS-CAN. High-speed CAN is what a standard OBD2 reader uses; medium-speed CAN is the separate bus the supplier says most modern Ford modules are only reachable through. The switch position decides which of the two the adapter is connected to, so one lead covers both without a second cable. The supplier names Focus, Mondeo and Kuga as models it is intended for.
The software is the other half
An interface like this is a pipe, and everything you can actually do with it comes from the Windows application at the far end. The supplier names ELMconfig, FORScan, FOCCCUS and FF2 as the software it is meant for, then lists module-level functions — coding, programming, actuator tests, regeneration routines. Those belong to the software and its licensing, not to the adapter, so nothing beyond reading and clearing codes and viewing live data is claimed here. No software, licence or subscription is supplied with the unit.
Key features
- HS-CAN / MS-CAN switch: selects the bus without changing leads or adaptors.
- Wired USB: no pairing to drop out partway through a scan.
- CH340 and 25K80 chips: the two designations the supplier states, worth recording before you go looking for drivers.
- Twelve OBD2 protocols: including 11-bit and 29-bit CAN at both 500 and 250 Kbaud.
Specifications
- Connection: USB, per the listing title
- Chips: CH340 + 25K80, as stated by the supplier
- CAN buses: HS-CAN and MS-CAN, selected by toggle switch
- OBD2 protocols: SAE J1850 PWM (41.6 Kbaud); SAE J1850 VPW (10.4 Kbaud); ISO9141-2 (5 baud init, 10.4 Kbaud); ISO14230-4 KWP (5 baud init, 10.4 Kbaud); ISO14230-4 KWP (fast init, 10.4 Kbaud); ISO15765-4 CAN 11-bit and 29-bit at 500 Kbaud and 250 Kbaud; SAE J1939 CAN (29-bit, 250 Kbaud); CAN 11-bit at 125 Kbaud and 50 Kbaud
- Software named by the supplier: ELMconfig, FORScan, FOCCCUS, FF2
- Cable length, enclosure size and PC requirements: nothing in the product data states them
- Software licence: not included, and none is claimed
Before you fit these
- Check your vehicle's OBD2 protocol against the list above. The supplier also names a long list of makes with no models or years attached, which is not repeated here because it cannot be verified.
- The Windows software is not supplied. Source it yourself and check its licence terms and vehicle coverage before you buy the adapter.
- Coding, programming and reset routines can leave a vehicle undrivable. Keep to reading and clearing codes unless you know the consequences, and keep a stable supply on the vehicle during any write operation.
- No approval by, or connection with, any vehicle manufacturer or software publisher is claimed for this item.
For reaching a bus a generic scanner cannot see, that switch is the whole reason the adapter exists.
