Getting the last few litres out of a jerry can usually means tipping it, or starting a siphon by mouth. Neither is much fun with diesel, and neither works on a container too heavy to lift. This battery extractor does the job on a button: drop the tube in, hold the switch, and fluid comes out through a flexible hose.
Runs on the batteries already in the drawer
There is no lead to plug in and no 12 volt socket to find. A conversion adaptor runs the motor from either two D cells or six AA cells, so it works off whatever the torch or the remote uses. Batteries are not supplied. The supplier quotes 2.2 gallons per minute without saying whether those are US or imperial gallons, so take it as a guide to speed rather than a number to time a transfer by.
Sized around a fuel can
The rigid suction tube measures 16 inches (about 40 cm) with a 1 inch outside diameter, which is what drops it straight through the neck of a 3 to 5 gallon fuel can, a jerrycan or a pail bucket with no adaptor. The outlet hose runs to 2 feet, enough to reach a container standing alongside. Materials are described only as non-toxic, tasteless and corrosion-resistant, and are not named.
Key features
- Battery powered: two D cells or six AA cells, both handled by the adaptor.
- One-button operation: no priming stroke and no siphon to start.
- Fits standard cans: the 1 inch tube clears most 3 to 5 gallon fuel containers.
- Flexible outlet hose: 2 feet of reach for a tank, a mower or a bowl.
Specifications

- Suction tube: 16 inches (about 40 cm) long, 1 inch diameter
- Outlet hose: 2 feet
- Fluids stated by supplier: gas, light oil, kerosene and diesel; corrosive liquids excluded
Before you use it
- The supplier's fluid list uses "gas" in the American sense, meaning petrol. It states no spark-protection, explosion-safety or ignition-protection rating for the motor or switch, so satisfy yourself about the pump's suitability before using it with petrol.
- Corrosive liquids are excluded by the supplier.
- Transfer fuel outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, keep ignition sources and cigarettes away, and bond or earth metal containers before moving fuel between them.
Cheap enough to keep in the boot of a ute or on the shelf above the mower fuel.
