A diesel heater that clicks, pumps and then throws a haze of white smoke without ever lighting has usually killed its glow plug. It is a consumable — the element burns out after enough start cycles — and swapping one is a far cheaper morning than replacing the whole heater.
Silicon nitride, not a coiled wire
The glow pin here is ceramic silicon nitride rather than a wound metal element. Ceramic pushes heat into the chamber quickly and holds its shape through repeated heating and cooling, where a coil gradually distorts. The supplier rates it for cold, damp conditions — a canopy on a frosty morning, or a boat cabin in winter. Faster heat transfer also lights the fuel charge more completely, leaving less unburnt diesel to foul the burner.
The removal tool is the part people forget
A seized glow plug is why this job turns into a two-hour argument. The kit includes an iron removal fitting tool sized to the plug housing, so the old one backs out without rounding off or dropping hardware into the burner. The connector then clips onto the heater's power port, with an insulating head keeping the terminal isolated from surrounding metal.
Key features
- Covers 2 kW, 5 kW and 8 kW heaters: suits both split and all-in-one layouts.
- Ceramic silicon nitride element: stable through repeated heat cycles and resistant to damp.
- Removal tool included: shaped for backing out a plug that has baked itself in.
- Insulated connector head: keeps the power connection seated and isolated once refitted.

What's in the box
- 1 x ceramic glow pin plug
- 1 x removal fitting tool
Before you start the job
- Isolate the heater from power and let it cool right down before removing the plug. The burner stays hot well after shutdown.
- Check the plug voltage and body size against your own heater before ordering. The supplier lists 8 V, and diesel heaters are also built around 12 V and 24 V plugs.
- Once the heater is running again, the exhaust must be routed outside the cabin exactly as the heater manufacturer specifies. These units burn fuel and produce carbon monoxide.
- A working carbon monoxide alarm is sensible in any space you sleep in with a diesel heater fitted.
If your heater has been getting harder to light with each season, change the glow plug before you start pulling the burner apart.
