Rules for a chain that carries a load overhead

• Lifting equipment, not recovery gear. This must never be used to snatch, winch or tow a vehicle — a dynamic load will destroy a lifting chain.
• Check every link, hook and adjuster before each lift. Retire the sling if anything is cut, nicked, cracked, corroded, bent, worn or stretched.
• Bring the slack up slowly. Never shock-load it.
• Nothing passes over a person, and nobody stands under a suspended load.
• The load belongs in the throat of the hook, not on its tip; the supplier says so directly.
• No twisting, knotting or turning the chain back on itself.
• Have a competent person assess the sling against the relevant standard before first use, then re-inspect on whatever schedule that standard requires.
