The long-handled brush is the one that goes inside the rim. Its head uses soft woolie fibres and the supplier specifies a 100 per cent metal-free construction — no exposed wire in the shaft or ferrule to score the finish when the handle inevitably rubs against a spoke edge. The supplier lists it as suitable for painted, chrome, powder-coated and polished wheels. The length is the point: it reaches the back of the barrel, where brake dust collects heaviest.

Soft and stiff, for jobs that are not alike

The grey brush carries soft bristles and is the supplier's pick for medium-duty work on body panels, wheels, tyres and exterior surfaces. The black brush is stiff-bristled and built for heavy grime — road film on tyre sidewalls, carpet and floor mats that have seen a wet campsite. Having both grades in one kit means the aggressive brush never has to be used where it does not belong.

Match the brush to the surface

• The supplier states plainly that the stiff black brush must not be used on surfaces easily damaged by friction, including paintwork and seats. Keep it on tyres, mats and carpet.
• Rinse embedded grit from any brush before it goes near a painted or polished finish.
