A spinner knob clamps to the rim of a steering wheel and turns on a bearing, letting the wheel be spun while one hand stays in a single spot. They are a familiar sight on tractors and forklifts. Some drivers fit them to cars. Here is precisely what this one is, and what to work through before it goes anywhere near your vehicle.
What the item actually is
A moulded body mounted on a rotating bearing, with a clamp that closes around the wheel rim. The supplier lists silicone for the outer grip surface, nylon for the body and metal for the internal parts. It measures 62 x 70 x 24 mm and weighs about 76 g. The clamp is described as universal and said to suit most car and light truck wheels, but no rim thickness range and no rim diameter range are published anywhere in the supplier's data — so there is no figure here to measure your own wheel against. Study the photographs and the clamp opening before ordering.
Clamping, and keeping it clamped
Everything about this accessory rests on the clamp staying tight. A knob that works loose can rotate on the rim, slide along it, or come away in the hand. Fit it with the fasteners fully tightened, drive a short distance, then check the tension again — and keep checking it at regular intervals afterwards. Heat cycling in a car parked outside and repeated load both work fasteners loose over time. Any movement at all between the clamp and the rim means taking it off and starting again.
Key features
- 360-degree bearing: the knob rotates independently of the hand holding it.
- Silicone outer surface: a textured grip face rather than bare plastic.
- Clamp fitting: no adhesive and no drilling, and it comes off again.
- Compact and light: 62 x 70 x 24 mm, about 76 g.

Before you fit this
- A spinner travels with the rim. If the wheel is released and unwinds on its own — after a kerb strike, a pothole, or a wheel dropping off the edge of the bitumen — the knob comes round with it and can hit a hand, wrist or forearm. Keep clear of a wheel that is spinning back.
- It is an object fixed to the steering wheel, sitting close to the driver's airbag module. It can be struck or thrown clear if that airbag deploys.
- Requirements for items attached to a steering wheel differ between Australian states and territories, and differ again where a driver has a medical need. Check with your state or territory road authority and with your insurer before fitting one.
- The supplier's own note asks that installation be checked before driving and the tightness inspected regularly. Follow it.
Supplied as the knob alone. If you are unsure whether it suits your vehicle or your circumstances, ask your road authority before you buy.
