Running a laptop charger or a soldering iron away from mains power means converting a vehicle battery's DC into alternating current, and that single job is what this unit does. It is rated at 420 W continuous with a 1000 W peak, accepts either a 12 V or a 24 V supply, and carries one AC socket alongside four USB ports.
Read the output figures before you buy
The title quotes 220 V. The specification table quotes a range of 200 V to 240 V. Both appear here because they do not agree, and neither should be treated as a guaranteed figure. Output frequency is stated as 50 Hz and the waveform as modified sine — a stepped approximation of mains rather than a true sine curve. What the supplier never states is the socket pattern on the AC outlet. A 220 V outlet on a unit of this type is frequently a European or Chinese pattern that an Australian plug will not enter, and no adaptor is listed among the contents.
Two ways in, and the 150 W line between them
Below 150 W the supplied cigarette lighter plug is enough. Above that, the supplier is explicit that the unit must go straight onto the battery using the two clamps, because a lighter socket and its wiring were never built to carry the current a 420 W load draws. Protection circuitry is claimed for overheating, undervoltage, overvoltage, short circuit, overload and overcharge. Before you plug anything in
- The AC side produces mains voltage. Treat that outlet exactly as you would a wall socket — keep it dry, keep it away from children, and never open the case with the input connected.
- Fit a suitably rated fuse or circuit breaker in the positive lead at the battery, as close to the terminal as practical. None is supplied and no rating is specified in the source.
- No Australian electrical approval, RCM mark or socket standard is named anywhere in the supplier data. Whether this unit and its outlet suit your equipment is a check for you, or for a licensed electrician.
- Modified sine wave is not mains. Some laptop chargers, variable-speed tools, microwaves, medical equipment and anything with a mains-synchronised motor or transformer will run hot, buzz, or refuse to work on it.
- Keep sustained loads under the 420 W continuous rating. The 1000 W figure is for momentary start-up surge.
- Above 150 W the supplier requires a direct battery connection. Pulling that load through a cigarette lighter socket risks melting the socket or its wiring.
Check your equipment's plug pattern and its tolerance for a modified sine wave first, then work out where the fuse goes.
