Working under a bonnet held up by nothing but its own gas struts is fine right up until those struts get tired. On an older 4WD they sag on a cold morning and the panel creeps down while your hands are deep in the engine bay. This aluminium clamp locks onto the extended strut shaft so the strut cannot retract underneath you.
A brass core against the strut shaft
The body is aluminium and the part that actually grips is a brass core, which matters more than it sounds. A gas strut runs its seal directly on a polished, hard-chromed rod, and that finish is the seal's whole life. Anything harder than brass biting into the rod scores it, the score chews the seal, and the strut bleeds down for good. Brass is soft enough to clamp hard without cutting. A knurled knob does the tightening and a locking nut sits behind it to stop the knob backing off as the vehicle is worked on.
The half of the tool the translation obscures
The supplier calls this a 2-in-1 and the title names a spark plug caliper, so a plug gap gauge is built into the same body. How the two functions relate is described in wording that has not survived translation, so the gauge appears here as a stated feature rather than an explained one.
Before you use this
- A working aid, not a support. It stops a strut retracting while you work. It is not a prop rod, not a safety stand, and not a substitute for either. Support the bonnet, boot lid or tailgate independently before any part of you goes underneath.
- No load rating is published. The supplier gives no working load, no holding force and no clamping figure. Nothing of the kind has been calculated here either.
- No strut diameter range is published either. That figure decides whether the clamp grips your strut at all. Measure the shaft on your own vehicle before ordering.
- If it slips, the panel drops. Confirm it is tight before trusting it, and check again every time it is repositioned.
Key features
- Brass gripping core: clamps the shaft without scoring the chrome the seal rides on.
- Locking nut: holds the tightening knob where you set it.
- Aluminium body: the material the supplier names, chosen against rust and wear.
