Dropping a subframe or pulling a gearbox on a front-drive car means the engine mounts come out while the engine is still sitting in the bay. Something has to hold it there. This Fiernero beam spans the engine bay from guard to guard and takes the weight through two chain-mounted hooks while you work underneath the mounts.

Fiernero publishes a load capacity of 500 kg for this beam. What the supplier does not state is the basis of that number — whether it is a working load limit, a static rating, a proof figure, or a value tested to any particular standard. Treat 500 kg as an absolute ceiling with no assumed reserve, and do not use the beam on anything you suspect is heavier. Adjusting across the bay

The beam adjusts out to approximately 1,500 mm of width, according to the supplier, so it can be set to land on solid structure at each end rather than on a plastic cowl or a washer bottle. Rubber-padded feet spread that contact and keep paint intact. Two adjustable hooks run on chains, which lets you position the pick-up points over the engine's natural lifting eyes and trim the balance rather than fighting it. The frame is steel with a powder-coated finish.

Support the engine from below as well

• Always carry the engine on a second support underneath — a trolley jack with a timber spreader, or purpose-made stands — not on the beam alone.
• Nobody puts any part of themselves under a load held only by a support bar.
• Check both feet are seated on structure that can take the load before you release a single mount.
• Inspect the chains and hooks for stretch, cracking or wear before every use.
