The O-ring seals, the thread just squeezes it

Sealing on a fuel can cap is the O-ring's job — the thread only supplies the clamp load that squashes it. That is why an old cap keeps weeping no matter how hard it is done up: the rubber has taken a set and no longer springs back. These come with an O-ring fitted and a coarse internal thread, and the body is thickened and widened so it sits square on the neck instead of cocking to one side.

Measure the neck before you order

The supplier lists these as suiting spouts from 1.75 to 1.81 inches across, roughly 44.5 to 46 mm, and describes them as fitting most 5-gallon plastic and metal cans plus 1, 2.5 and 10-gallon-plus sizes. Necks vary a lot between brands, so that measurement matters more than the can's advertised capacity. Run a ruler or a caliper across the outside of your neck and compare before ordering.

Before you screw one on

• The supplier names no fuel container standard for these caps — they are not stated as UN, AS/NZS or otherwise approved. If the can is used to carry fuel in a vehicle, check the requirements that apply to you.
• Hand tight is enough. Over-tightening distorts the O-ring and makes the seal worse, not better.
• Let a can that has been sitting in the sun cool down, and crack the cap slowly — vapour pressure builds inside.
• Fill and decant in the open air, clear of ignition sources, and put the cigarette out.
• Fit the cap, invert the empty can briefly and look for weeps before you trust it in the vehicle.
