Current between a battery and an inverter is the heaviest load a 12 V system carries, and all of it crosses two joints: the lug at the battery and the lug at the equipment. Resistance at either end becomes heat and lost volts well before the conductor is troubled.
Lugs, plating and sealed barrels
Both ends are terminated in 3/8 in lugs the supplier describes as solid copper with a tin plating for corrosion protection. Plating earns its keep at a battery, where acid vapour attacks bare copper and the green bloom that follows quietly adds resistance to a sound joint. Heat shrink over each barrel covers the crimp and keeps moisture off the strand ends.
A short red-and-black pair
The set is one red cable and one black, each 1 ft, about 30 cm. That is a link length rather than a run: battery to an inverter alongside it, battery to an isolator, or post to post between two batteries. The supplier calls the conductor 4 gauge battery and welding cable, and lists it for automotive, solar, marine, boat, RV, car and motorcycle use.
What the supplier has not rated
No current rating is published for this cable, nor an insulation temperature or voltage rating. Do not reason backwards from the gauge to an ampacity. Size the cable to the figure in your inverter or charger manual, and set the fuse from that manual too.
Specifications
- Conductor: 4 AWG, described in the title as pure copper
- Length: 1 ft, about 30 cm, per cable
- Terminations: 3/8 in lugs at both ends
- Lug material: solid copper, tin plated, per the supplier
- End sealing: heat shrink over each lug barrel
- Contents: one red cable, one black cable
- Current rating, insulation type and temperature rating: the supplier publishes none of these
Before you connect it
- Check the 3/8 in lug hole against the stud diameter on your battery terminal and equipment.
- Protect the positive run with a fuse close to the battery, at the rating your equipment specifies.
- Isolate the battery first, and have a qualified person make the connection at the battery or the vehicle's wiring.
A tidy answer where a short, heavy link is all the job needs.
