A chain leg is only as good as what is on the end of it. These are grade 80 drop-forged eye sling hooks with safety latches, supplied as a pair with matching 8 mm hammerlocks so they join onto chain without a shackle or a trip to the rigging shop.

What the 1.12 tonne rating actually covers

The supplier quotes a working load limit of 1.12 tonnes for the hook, a breaking force of 4.48 tonnes and a design factor of 4:1. Those figures agree with each other. Two hooks in a pack does not make 2.24 tonnes, though. A working load limit belongs to one component and cannot be added across a set, and any assembly is capped by its weakest part: the chain, the hammerlock or the hook.

Forged, and specified down to the alloy

The hook body is 40CrMo and the latch 35CrMo, both chromium-molybdenum steels, drop-forged rather than cast. That matters in lifting gear because a forged hook tends to deform visibly under overload instead of letting go without warning, which gives you something to inspect for. The latch closes the throat so a sling or chain eye cannot jump out when a load swings or goes slack.

• 1.12 tonne is the figure given for the hook. Never add ratings across the pair, and never assume an assembly is rated above its lowest component.
• Inspect before every lift. A bent throat, a stretched eye or a latch that will not close means the hook is finished.
• The title mentions caravan and trailer safety chain use, but no towing or safety-chain standard is named. Requirements are set by your state road authority, so confirm them first.
• Nobody stands under a suspended load, and these are not for lifting people.
