Halfway through re-terminating a trailer harness, the joint in front of you is 16-14 and the next two along are 22-16, and the packet on the bench has one size left in it. This kit puts 500 barrels in each of three gauges on the workbench at once, colour-marked, so the sorting is done before the first wire is stripped.
Colour tells you the gauge
Red barrels take 22-16 AWG, blue take 16-14 AWG and yellow take 12-10 AWG, 500 of each, which is the supplier's own breakdown. That matters when the work is under a dash with a torch in your teeth: you pick by colour instead of squinting at printing on a barrel the size of a match head. The sleeve is transparent, so once the wire is seated you can see whether both conductors have actually reached the barrel before committing to the crimp.
Adhesive lining is the reason for the heat
The supplier describes the tubing as adhesive-lined double-wall polyolefin with a 3:1 shrink ratio, and gives 80°C as the shrink temperature with a minimum full-shrink temperature of 130°C. Those two numbers are the whole trick. Drawing the sleeve down tight is not the finish; the lining has to get hot enough to flow and run out against the wire insulation at each end. A sleeve that has shrunk without weeping adhesive has closed nothing at all.
Key features
- Three gauges in one box: 22-16, 16-14 and 12-10 AWG, so a mixed loom repair is covered without opening a second packet.
- 500 of each: enough to redo a full harness rather than patch one joint and hope.
- Clear sleeve: lets you confirm the conductor is home before you squeeze the handles.
- Seamless barrel: the supplier's stated construction is thick tinned copper with no seam running along it.
Specifications
- Piece count: 1500 — 500 red 22-16 AWG, 500 blue 16-14 AWG, 500 yellow 12-10 AWG. The breakdown reconciles to the stated total
- Sleeve: double-wall polyolefin, adhesive lined, 3:1 shrink ratio, per the supplier
- Barrel material: tinned copper, described by the supplier as 99.9% pure
- Operating temperature: -55°C to 125°C, as stated by the supplier
- Shrink temperature: 80°C, with a minimum full-shrink temperature of 130°C, as stated by the supplier
- Current and voltage rating: none given — the listing names no amperage, no voltage and no wiring standard
- Ingress protection: "waterproof" and "marine grade" are the supplier's own words; no IP rating, immersion figure or test method accompanies them
What's in the box
- 1500 heat shrink butt connectors, split 500 red, 500 blue and 500 yellow
- No crimping tool and no heat gun — neither is included
Getting a sound joint
- Crimp with a tool made for insulated terminals. Pliers squash a barrel rather than forming it, and a deformed barrel works loose under vibration.
- Keep heating until adhesive is visibly flowing from both ends. Shrunk and sealed are two different things.
- Match the barrel to the wire rather than the reverse. A conductor rattling around in an oversized barrel will not be gripped.
- No amperage guidance is offered here. Work out load, fusing and cable size for your own circuit, and where a splice goes into the vehicle's own wiring, have a qualified auto electrician do it.
A sensible box to have on the shelf before the next loom job, rather than discovering the gap partway through one.
