A hydraulic jack that creeps down under load is usually not broken. The small rubber plug covering its oil port has hardened, split or fallen out somewhere, and the jack is losing pressure past it. The repair costs almost nothing — tracking down a single plug when you need one is the hard part.
A dozen spares beats hunting for one
The pack holds twelve, which covers the bottle jack in the ute, the trolley jack in the shed and whatever comes home from the next clearing sale. Each plug is moulded in rubber with a conical body, so it wedges into the port and holds under the pressure the jack builds. The taper does the sealing rather than a thread, which is why fitting takes no special tools: pull the old plug, wipe around the port so grit does not go in with the new one, then press it home by hand.
Key features
- Twelve to a pack: enough for several jacks and years of replacements.
- Rubber seal: keeps oil in and pressure up, so the jack holds its load properly.
- Conical body: wedges into the port and resists deforming under hydraulic pressure.
- Fits by hand: no tools, no threads, nothing to strip.

- Material: rubber
- Diameter: 9 mm per the product title; the supplier's description quotes 0.35 inch (8.9 mm)

Getting under a vehicle safely
- A jack is a lifting tool, not a support. Once the vehicle is up, put axle stands under it and lower the load onto them before anyone goes underneath.
- After changing a plug, test the jack under load at ground level and watch for seepage before trusting it.
- Top up only with the hydraulic jack oil the jack maker specifies, and do not overfill the reservoir.
Cheap enough to keep in the toolbox so a leaking jack never costs you a whole afternoon.
