Grips the door frame, not the paint

Two sets of clamps are supplied so the jaws can be matched to the shape of your door aperture, and adjustable straps take up the slack. The clamps close onto the frame, with rubber pads and strips between metal and car — that is what keeps the contact points from grinding through paint on a corrugated road. Fitting means positioning the bars, seating the clamps and tightening them down. Nothing is drilled or cut, and nothing permanent is left behind if you sell the car.

Locked bars and a quieter roofline

An anti-theft locking system with two keys comes as part of the rack, which counts for more than it sounds: bars left on a car overnight in a motel car park are otherwise a two-minute theft. The profile is elliptical rather than square.
