The hardware description is inconsistent too: the title says a zinc alloy buckle, while the body text says a galvanised stainless steel ratchet. The material claim for the webbing wanders in the same way, called polyester in one line and nylon in another. Photos are the more reliable guide until the supplier tidies its listing.

Made for cargo, not for pulling a vehicle

Bikes on a carrier, furniture in a moving van, luggage on a roof rack, kayaks and canoes on a trailer — that is the work these are built for, and the ratchet means tension goes on without tying a knot and without needing a second pair of hands. What they are not is recovery gear. A tie-down strap has none of the stretch, the width or the rated hardware a snatch strap needs, and pulling a bogged vehicle with one turns it into a projectile.

Before you strap a load down

• Check the webbing and the ratchet every time you use them. Cuts, fraying, burns, a bent frame or a pawl that will not latch mean the strap is finished — retire it rather than nursing it along.
• Never join two straps together with a shackle or a hook to make up length.
• Keep people clear while you are winding tension on and while you release it. A loaded ratchet can spring back when the pawl lets go.
• Not recovery equipment. Never use a tie-down strap to tow or snatch a vehicle, and never attach recovery loads to anything other than rated recovery points.
• Run the webbing away from sharp edges, or pad the edge, because a strap under tension cuts itself surprisingly fast.
