Sand at the wrong tide, or a clay track two days after rain, and the wheels turn without the vehicle going anywhere. Digging on its own rarely fixes that. What fixes it is putting something firm under the tread. These are the 910 mm Gen2.0 boards, the full-length version rather than a compact one.

How the moulded lugs actually hold

The upper face carries a U-shaped reinforcing pattern with spikes that bite into the tyre and resist the board sliding sideways as the wheel loads up. Underneath, a cruciform pattern grips loose ground instead of skating over it, and stiffens the board against bending across an unsupported span. Both ends taper lower than the body, so a tyre climbs on rather than butting into a step. At 910 mm there is enough length to carry a wheel through a full rotation and past the point where it finds grip.

Nylon that survives life on the roof rack

X-BULL moulds these from reinforced nylon, chosen for toughness, fatigue resistance and UV stability rather than outright stiffness. That combination is what lets a board bow under a wheel and come back straight afterwards, season after season in Australian sun. A pair weighs 4.7 kg, so lifting them down is a one-hand job. The shaped handle exists for carrying them wet and caked in mud, when a plain flat edge would slip out of your fingers.

Before you drive onto them

• Ease onto the boards at low revs. A spinning tyre melts the lugs flat in seconds and can fire a board out behind the vehicle at speed.
• Check for cracks, flattened lugs and permanent bends before every use, and retire a damaged board.
• Nobody stands behind or beside the boards while the vehicle is being driven off them.
• These are traction boards, not recovery equipment. Do not use them to snatch, tow or winch.
• Treat the 10 tonne figure as the supplier's number rather than a rated capacity, since no basis is given for it.

Collect them before you drive away. Boards left behind in a rut have a habit of staying there.
