A 6,000 lb winch is the size most people actually need. It is enough to drag a bogged quad backwards out of a wallow or wind a boat up onto its trailer, without the weight and the current draw of a full-size 4WD unit. This one is built as a single piece to keep the wiring down to two leads.

Two leads and it is wired

Motor, gearbox and the sealed solenoid pack all live in one housing, so there is no separate control box to find room for and no loom to route between them — connect positive and negative and the job is done. The supplied battery leads are 6-gauge and 1.83 m long. A battery of at least 650 CCA is specified, and that figure is worth respecting: a winch working hard draws hundreds of amps, and a tired battery is the most common reason a winch stalls partway through a pull.

Gearing that suits long, slow pulls

The gear train is a three-stage planetary set running a 226:1 reduction. Splitting the reduction across three stages means no single set of gears carries the whole load, which is what lets the winch grind away at a slow recovery rather than heating one overloaded pinion. A cam-activated clutch lets the drum free-spool so the rope can be walked out by hand instead of powered out, and a mechanical automatic brake holds the drum the moment the motor stops.

Synthetic line instead of wire

The drum carries 16.8 m of 6.3 mm synthetic rope. It weighs a fraction of steel cable of the same pull, floats rather than sinking during a water crossing, and never develops the broken strands that shred bare hands. It carries less stored energy than wire rope, though it is still a loaded line and must be treated as one. The trade-off is that synthetic dislikes UV, grit and heat, so it wants rinsing after a muddy trip and a look over for furring or glazing. The alloy hawse fairlead is the right match for it.

Working safely with a winch line

• Inspect the rope, hook, fairlead and leads before every pull. Retire line that is cut, furred, glazed or flattened rather than getting one more recovery out of it.
• Lay a heavy dampener over the line before it comes under tension.
• Keep every person well clear of the line and of the whole arc it would sweep if it or an anchor let go.
• Anchor to rated recovery points only. A tow ball, a tow bar tongue, a bumper or an unrated bracket is not a recovery point.
• Never join two lines or straps with a shackle.
• The quoted line pull applies to the first layer of rope on the drum. Pulling power falls away as the rope stacks up, so spool out to the bottom layer for the heaviest work.
• This is a recovery winch, not a hoist. Do not use it for overhead lifting or to hold a suspended load.
