Recovery boards are awkward cargo. Loose in the boot they slide about and coat everything in dried mud, and stacked against the tailgate they are the first thing to fall out at a servo. This kit pairs four boards with two sets of mounting pins, so they go straight onto the roof rack and stay there.

Bolted to the rack, not stacked in the boot

Each pin set holds two boards flat against a rack or bar. There are four pins per set plus eight iron nuts and eight flat washers, and the method is straightforward: seat the pins through the boards onto the rack, fit the black retaining plate and tighten the nuts down. With two sets included, all four boards mount at once. The hardware now carries an anti-rust coating, which X-BULL notes makes the parts visibly darker than they appear in the product photography — a finish change, not a different component.

Ribs on top, cross-pattern underneath

The Gen 2.0 board is moulded from a reinforced nylon blend with a U-shaped reinforcing pattern across the driving surface. Spikes within that pattern stop a tyre sliding off sideways as it takes weight, which is the failure most people meet on their first attempt. The underside uses cruciform ribbing that grips the sand or mud beneath and keeps the board from being kicked away. Both ends are moulded lower than the middle so the tyre climbs on instead of butting into an edge, and that same tapered end works as a scoop for digging out a buried wheel.

The pin set, in detail

The mounting hardware is a small package — 13.8 x 10.8 x 6.2 cm and 0.72 kg per set — with nuts and flat washers already included, so there is no trip to the hardware shop before the boards go up. Four colours are stocked at the same price: Olive, Black, Blue and Red. Darker boards hide dirt between trips; brighter ones are quicker to spot when one has been driven over and left half-buried behind the vehicle.

Before you drive onto them

• Ten tonnes is X-BULL's figure for flat ground. No standard is named and no working load limit is quoted separately, so read it as a maximum vehicle weight over level, supported ground rather than a certified rating.
• Wheelspin is what destroys boards. Feed the throttle in gently and let the tread walk up the ribs; a spinning tyre melts the surface and can eject a board at speed.
• Nobody stands behind, beside or in front of the vehicle while it is driving off the boards.
• Check the pins and nuts for tightness before every trip. Corrugations work fasteners loose, and a board leaving a roof rack at highway speed is a serious matter.
• Inspect the boards after each use and take cracked or heat-damaged ones out of service.
• Boards are traction aids only. Do not attach a strap, rope or shackle to them for towing, snatching or winching.
