Most people buy their first set of boards after one bad afternoon — a wheel dropped into a rut, a shovel that was never going to be enough, and a long walk out for help. This is a complete two-board kit: the tracks, a tote to keep them in, leashes to pull them back out, and pins to mount them on a rack.

A metre of board instead of 910 millimetres

The Gen 3.0 track measures 1060 x 310 x 60 mm, around 150 mm longer than the earlier generation. Extra length counts when a tyre has sunk deep: a longer board reaches further back into firm ground before the ramp section begins, so the wheel has more supported surface to climb and less opportunity to push the board under itself. X-BULL also specifies enhanced flexibility in the Gen 3.0 nylon blend, letting the board conform to an uneven surface rather than bridging a hollow and taking the load on two high points.

Rivets set at different angles

The signature feature of this generation is the rivet pattern across the driving surface. Those rivets are not identical to each other: contact faces are angled differently depending on where they sit on the board, so a tyre meeting the track at an awkward approach angle still finds bite instead of skating across the top. Underneath, the U-shaped reinforcing structure carries the load and resists folding. Both ends slope down to a shovel-like tip, which is the quickest way to clear packed sand from in front of a buried tyre before the board goes in.

The tote and leashes are part of the kit

Boards come back from a recovery covered in whatever they were pulled out of. The included tote takes them straight off the vehicle and keeps the mess contained, and it is designed to work alongside the mounting pins rather than instead of them. The two leashes are the piece owners most often wish they had bought first: a board that has been driven over usually ends up under the vehicle or buried behind it, and a leash means retrieving it from a standing position instead of on your knees. A sticker set is included as well.

Where these boards can hurt you

• The 10-tonne capacity is X-BULL's, stated for flat ground, with no test standard named and no working load limit given. Treat it as a maximum vehicle weight on level, fully supported ground.
• Two boards cover one axle. If both axles are buried, expect to move the boards forward and repeat, or to run a second pair.
• Never spin a wheel on a board. Heat from a spinning tyre destroys the surface and can throw the board out behind the vehicle hard enough to injure someone.
• Everyone stands well away from the vehicle's path and from the ground behind each board.
• Inspect after every use. A cracked or melted board goes in the bin, not back on the rack.
• Boards are a traction aid, not rated recovery equipment. Do not shackle to them, tow from them or winch against them.
