Universal Black Metal Steering Wheel Car Accessories Helper Grip Spinner Knob

A steering wheel spinner knob is a round handle that clamps to the rim of the wheel so it can be spun with one hand. Long-standing kit on forklifts, tractors and boats, and some drivers fit one to a car for tight parking or reversing a trailer. This is a clamp-on version with an ABS body on a metal bracket.

How it mounts and what it is made from

The knob clamps to the wheel rim rather than bolting through it, so nothing about the wheel is permanently altered. Inside the knob is a steel bearing, which is what lets it sit still in your palm while the rim turns underneath. The body is ABS plastic in black with chrome trim, on a metal bracket, and it measures 9 cm by 8 cm (3.5 in x 3.1 in). The handle folds when it is not in use. The supplier notes it will not suit a wheel wearing a cover thicker than standard, because the clamp opening is a fixed size.

What changes once one is fitted

This deserves proper thought rather than a line of fine print. A spinner alters how the wheel is held: with a hand on the knob you are no longer feeding the rim through both hands, and if the wheel returns quickly, coming off full lock or after a front tyre catches a kerb or a rut, the knob travels around with it and can strike a hand, wrist or knee. It also sits on the face of the wheel, which is where an airbag deploys from, so anything mounted there is in the path of the cover and the bag. Loose sleeves, cuffs, watch bands and lanyards can snag on a protruding knob. The supplier's own instruction is to check the clamp is securely fastened before driving and to use the knob with caution so full control of the vehicle is maintained.
