Leave a car in an open car park through a January afternoon and the steering wheel comes back too hot to hold. This shade mounts along the base of the windscreen and pulls up on a telescopic aluminium alloy bar, covering the glass rather than hanging off the visors with a gap at each edge.

Gears do the packing away

Refolding a concertina shade in a hot car is why most end up living in the boot. This one winds onto a sprung, geared spool: unhook the top bar and it retracts on its own into a slim tube that clips out of the way. Putting it away costs a second, so it actually gets used. The bar telescopes, so one unit suits a narrow hatch windscreen or a wide ute.

Coated cloth, not thin plastic film

The panel is 210D Oxford cloth with a silver coating on one face. Oxford weave is what tarps and gear bags use, because it takes repeated folding without splitting, and the coated side reflects rather than absorbs, so heat is turned back at the glass instead of soaking into the dashboard. The supplier describes the fit as fully sealed, which counts at the corners, where a loose shade lets a wedge of sun onto the dash.

• The supplier quotes the bar at 70-145 cm and the cloth at 72-140 cm, and gives no vehicle fitment list; measure your windscreen at its widest point and check the 120 cm drop clears your mirror mount.
