Heat in the cabin has usually come through the firewall or the bonnet skin, and the noise rides in alongside it. This kit covers 1.8 square metres of that surface in twelve sheets, using a laminate the supplier rates for temperature stability from -40°C to +180°C.

Three layers, two densities

Instead of one slab of foam, this is a tri-layer build: two foam layers of differing density under a tough outer facing. Mixing densities widens the band of frequencies the material can absorb, so engine noise, exhaust boom and tyre whine are all pulled down rather than just the easy high notes. The outer cover is doing a different job again, surviving the grit, oil mist and general abuse of an engine bay or a load floor.

Where it earns its keep

The supplier lists the bulkhead, firewall, bonnet, engine compartment, boot, wheel arches, body panels, load floor, under-seat and interior bulkhead as target areas, and notes the material has enough load resistance for under-floor use. That last point is the one worth reading twice: plenty of acoustic foams crush permanently once carpet and feet go on top of them, and stop doing anything at all.

Clean and dry the panel first; adhesive backing and old engine bay grime are a poor combination.
