One bucket, one half bench: count yours first

Stand at the driver's door and study the seat beside yours. A three-across cab has a single sculpted seat behind the wheel and a narrower two-place bench next to it, usually with a centre back that folds. A two-seat cab has a matched pair with a gap between them. Everything in this pattern is shaped for the first of those. The supplier lists VDJ79R against it, in GX, GXL and Workmate grades. If your cab runs twin buckets, take the other set rather than hoping this one stretches over the difference.

Sunlight from one side, sunscreen from the other

A 70 Series bought in 2008 is usually still working, and usually still on its original trim. Two things have been eating that trim the whole time. Worth settling before you buy

• Seat layout. This is the single biggest cause of a returned cover set. Three across, or two buckets — confirm which your cab has, and check the photographs against your own seats.

• Airbags. Compatibility is asserted by the supplier alone, and nothing in the source names a release seam or a test standard. Look for an airbag tag on the outer bolster of your seat, and if there is one, have a qualified fitter do or check the job before you drive.
