Steel winch cable stores energy and holds it, and when it lets go it whips. Synthetic line is why most recovery crews changed over: at 2.46 kg for 30 metres it is light enough to walk out to an anchor one-handed, and it does not develop the sharp broken strands that make old steel cable painful to handle.
Dyneema SK75, and what the coating is for
SK75 is the grade of ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene used in most quality winch lines, chosen because the fibre is strong for its weight and barely stretches under load. Low stretch is the point: the rope pulls rather than springs. The urethane coating is there to slow UV degradation and shed water and chemicals, because bare UHMWPE fibre loses strength in sunlight over years of sitting wound on an exposed drum. At 9.5 mm it suits winches specified for that diameter, and the 30 m length gives reach to a distant anchor.
The 23,809 lb figure is a breaking load
ZESUPER states a breaking load of 23,809 lb for this rope. That is the point at which a new, undamaged sample is expected to fail — not a working load limit, and not a number to plan a recovery around. No safety factor has been applied to it, and none is stated by the supplier. In practice the rope is only ever as strong as the winch, the hook, the shackle and the recovery point it is joined to, and any one of those can be the weak link. Inspect it accordingly.
Key features
- Dyneema SK75 fibre: high strength for its weight, with very little stretch under load.
- 2.46 kg for 30 m: light enough to carry out to an anchor without a second pair of hands.
- Urethane coating: slows UV damage and sheds water and chemicals on a drum that lives outdoors.
- 9.5 mm diameter: a common replacement size, but check your winch's specified line diameter before ordering.
- Hook supplied: the rope comes with a hook fitted rather than as bare line.

Rules that apply to every winch pull
- Run the whole length through your hands before each use and retire the rope if you find cuts, glazing, heavy fuzzing or a damaged eye. Synthetic line does not give much warning.
- Lay a dampener over the rope once it is under tension.
- Keep people clear of the rope and of the arc it would sweep if it or the anchor failed.
- Use rated recovery points only. Never rig to a tow ball, tow bar tongue, bumper or an unrated bracket.
- Never join two straps or ropes with a shackle.
- Fit a hawse fairlead if your winch still has a roller fairlead. Rollers chew synthetic rope.
A straightforward replacement line for a winch already specified for 9.5 mm rope. Check your drum capacity and fairlead type first, and ask us if you are unsure which your winch takes.
