A loaded touring wagon on soft sand doesn't need a winch that pulls hard once. It needs one that keeps pulling while you dig, reposition and try again. This 12,000 lb X-BULL runs a six horsepower series-wound motor through three-stage planetary gearing, a combination built for repeated recovery rather than a single heroic yank.

Gearing that tolerates a long, slow pull

A 265:1 reduction is what lets the motor turn easily while the drum turns slowly, and the three-stage planetary set spreads that reduction across several groups of gears instead of loading one pair. Torque is shared, heat is shared, and nothing is asked to carry the whole job on its own. That matters on the kind of recovery where the car creeps out over a minute or two rather than popping free. The sliding ring gear clutch lets you free-spool the line out by hand, so you are not driving the drum backwards just to reach the anchor.

A sealed control box and a steel housing

Recovery work happens in the wet. X-BULL describes the integrated control box as working submerged, and lists its contact material as AgCdO, chosen to carry high current without the contacts welding shut, with protection built in against over-current, over-voltage and over-temperature. The housing is all steel under a black frosted paint finish, and the diamond-pattern casting on the gearbox exists to shed heat rather than to look tough. Both remotes are supplied: the corded big-grip handset for when you want to stand where you can see the line, and a wireless unit for when you cannot.

Working safely with a winch line

• Inspect the line, hook, fairlead and mounting bolts before every use, and retire anything cut, kinked, frayed or deformed.
• Lay a dampener over the line whenever it is under load.
• Keep everyone well clear of the line and of the arc it would sweep if it or an anchor let go. Nobody stands in line with the pull.
• Anchor to rated recovery points only, or to a tree with a proper trunk protector. Never a tow ball, tow bar tongue, bumper or any unrated bracket.
• Never join two straps or lines with a shackle.
• The 12,000 lb figure describes the winch, not the hook, shackle, strap or recovery point you attach it to. Work to whichever item in the system is rated lowest.
