Strapping a bike down is where paintwork usually gets ruined — a bare ratchet hook against a set of handlebars leaves marks you can't polish out. Using them safely

• Use them with ratchet or cam-buckle straps, never on their own. The source states no working load limit, so match them to restraints rated for your load.
• Route the loops so they can't rub against a sharp edge or a rough surface.
• Check tension at your first stop — webbing settles once the load has moved a little.
• Replace any strap showing fraying, cuts or glazing straight away.
