A tarp corner working loose at 100 km/h, or a swag sliding around the trailer floor on a corrugated track, is the sort of small annoyance that turns into a stop by the roadside. Four short elastic cords with a carabiner on each end handle most of it without needing a ratchet strap.
An 8 mm latex core that pulls back
Each cord is 30 cm long with an 8 mm core. The supplier describes the material as latex, and separately as rubber, in the same listing. What the thickness buys you is resilience: a thin cord goes slack after a season of stretching, while a heavier core keeps returning to length, so the tarp stays tight on day ten of a trip rather than just on day one. Thirty centimetres is deliberately short — these are for cinching things down close, not for spanning a whole load.
A carabiner at each end
Both ends carry a metal carabiner rather than the usual bare S-hook. That is the difference that matters here: a carabiner clips onto a rail, an eyelet or a roof bar and stays there, where an open hook can jump off the moment tension drops over a bump. The supplier notes the cords can be clipped together end to end when 30 cm is not enough reach. Useful, but each extra joint is one more thing that can release under load.
Key features
- Set of four: enough to hold down each corner of a tarp or a load cover.
- Carabiner both ends: clips on and stays on, unlike an open hook that can unseat when the cord goes slack.
- 8 mm core: a heavier section that keeps its stretch instead of going slack after a few trips.
- Linkable: clip two together when you need more reach than 30 cm.
Specifications
- Quantity: 4 cords (the description states four; the product title omits the number)
- Length: 30 cm each
- Core diameter: 8 mm
- Material: the supplier says rubber in one place and 8 mm latex in another
- End fittings: metal carabiners, both ends
- Colour: green (per product title)
- Load rating: none stated by the supplier
Before you clip them on
- No load figure is published. The supplier claims good load-bearing capacity but gives no kilogram figure and names no standard.
- A stretched cord stores energy. If a carabiner lets go it whips back fast — keep your face out of the line of pull and stand to one side while clipping.
- Don't overstretch. Cords used near their limit fatigue quickly. Retire any cord with a split sheath, exposed core or a distorted carabiner gate.
- These are not load restraint. Heavy or hard cargo needs a rated lashing, and vehicle recovery needs rated recovery points and rated points only — never a tow ball, tow bar tongue or bumper.
Keep a set in the glovebox and the tarp, the esky lid and the tent fly all stop being a problem.
