Push on, tethered, and safe through the car wash

Fitting takes a second: line the cap up over a standard 50 mm ball and press it home. The moulding is weather-resistant plastic, which the supplier says holds up to sun, rain and a run through the car wash without needing to come off. A strap loop and ring are included, so the cap can be tethered to the tow bar or the drawbar instead of disappearing into the gutter the first time you hitch up. Removal is a straight pull — no tools, and no fasteners to lose in the grass.

Before you fit this

• Measure the ball first. The supplier calls it universal and says it suits most vehicles, but it is sized for 50 mm and will not seat on other sizes.
• Take the cover off before coupling a trailer. It is a protective cap, carries no load and is not part of the tow system.
• A tow ball is not a recovery point. Never attach a snatch strap, kinetic rope, winch line or tow rope to one — recovery loads belong on rated recovery points and rated gear only.
