Guy ropes on an awning go slack overnight, and re-tensioning a knot in the dark with a torch in your teeth gets old fast. A small ratchet spliced into the line takes up the slack a click at a time, then lets it all go again just as quickly when it is time to pack up.

Four metres of reflective cord per rope

Each rope is 4 m of 4 mm cord, long enough for awning guys, tarp lines, a clothesline between two trees or holding gear down on a roof rack. The cord is reflective, which matters more than it sounds — a low guy line strung across a campsite is exactly what people trip over after dark, and a torch beam picks these up. The braid is a nylon and polypropylene blend with metal hardware, the carabiners measure 5 x 50 mm, and two replacement hooks are included in the pack.

No load rating is given — plan around that

Nowhere in the supplier's material is there a load figure for this rope: no working load limit, no breaking strength, no standard. That absence is the important spec. Use these for tensioning and holding light things in place — awning guys, tarps, gear stacked in a tray — and keep them away from anything where a failure drops or launches a load. They are not lifting gear and not vehicle recovery gear. The cord can be cut shorter if 4 m is more than the job needs.

Before you rig one up

• No load figure is published for these, so keep them off lifting, suspending anything overhead, and vehicle recovery.
• Check the cord for chafe and the ratchet for grit or a worn pawl before use, and retire anything that slips under tension.
• A guy line at shin height is still a trip hazard even when it is reflective. Flag it where people walk.
• Recovery loads belong on purpose-made recovery gear attached to rated recovery points, never on a light utility rope.
