Two lengths of timber and some optimism is how most machines get onto a trailer, right up until the day a plank splits under a wheel. This pair of aluminium ramps runs 2.5 metres, 30 cm wide each, and is rated for heavy equipment — enough to walk a mower, a quad or a small machine onto a deck 75 cm off the ground.

Why the grade of aluminium matters

These are made from 6061 aluminium, the grade used through aircraft structures for its high tensile strength and low fatigue factor. Fatigue is the number that counts here: every load flexes the beam and lets it spring back, and a material that handles that badly gets weaker each cycle until it fails without warning. 6061 holds its rating through repeated use, and keeps each ramp to 22 kg over two and a half metres.

The latch plate that stops it kicking out

Each ramp is supplied with a removable locking latch plate. It slots into a suitable point on the trailer or tray edge and holds the ramp where you set it, which addresses the failure that actually hurts people: a ramp creeping sideways or skipping off the lip as weight transfers onto it. Because the plate lifts out, the same ramps suit a trailer lip, a ute tailgate or a raised dock.
