Loading a full-size farm quad into a ute tray goes wrong quietly: a flexing ramp, a wheel near the edge, and the bike is coming back down. This folding pair uses thicker gauge alloy than most sets in the class.

Why there is no leg in the middle

A support leg under the centre of a ramp looks reassuring and behaves badly. Once the load moves past it onto the upper section, weight comes off the ground contact at the bottom. The triangulation holding the ramp against the trailer disappears, and the ramp can be kicked backwards even with straps fitted, which is how a bike ends up on top of its rider with the front wheels still in the tray.

Grade 6061 alloy and heavier sections

The rails are Grade 6061 aluminium alloy, chosen by the supplier for high tensile strength and low fatigue, meaning it resists the slow cracking that comes of being flexed and released hundreds of times. Heavier sections make each ramp weigh more than a budget set, the trade for stiffness under a quad. Unfolded, each measures 230 x 28 cm.
